About Cedar
Cedar wood is lightweight and resistant to both cracking and moisture rot. The oils of this resilient wood guard against insect attack and decay, and their distinctive aroma acts as a mild insect repellent. Cedar is a dependable choice for outdoor furniture, either as a finished or unfinished wood. Over time, unfinished cedar left outdoors will weather to a silvery gray patina. This natural process does not compromise the strength or integrity of the wood.

This planter is home to 8 herb plants and sits on my patio. It's solid, well made and has very nice design features. The mitered edges are very well done. We did Thompson water-seal it as it will turn gray if left untreated and we definitely did not want that to happen. The only drawback is that it does not come with a plastic liner - something that is recommended to use by the manufacturer if you intend to plant directly into the box. I've noticed a lot of other planter boxes come with a liner so I was disappointed that this one didn't come with it. We used a piece of thick plastic dropcloth and stapled it in to substitute for a liner. Just make sure you cut drainage holes.

Thankfully I paid the sale price vs list price. I question the list price, as these are not nearly as well-made as I expected. I bought 3 of them and found these flaws: One had a gouge out of a panel and that panel was split, several of the top miter joints didn't meet correctly and there were gaps, there was a blue marker mark on one and an orange mark on another, the feet weren't finished and were splintery, as were the 2 drilled holes in each. The feet were nailed on vs. screwed on... Nonetheless I am keeping them as I can hide the sides with the defects and they still look reasonably good and were close to the size I wanted. Just don't expect anything like a furniture-quality product.

I drilled several more holes in the bottom, as I didn't think that 2 were sufficient, and also lined the inside with plastic and coated the outside with linseed oil. If they hold up for several years, I won't be unhappy.

              Customer Q & A

Q1: How would these hold up if we painted them?

A: These planter boxes come to you pre-stained. If you would like to paint them, you would first need to completely sand away the stain, then apply the paint.

Q2: I am very interested in this planter, but I need something that can roll. Is it possible to add casters to this planter that will not mar a wood floor?

A: Yes, you certainly can put casters on the bottom of the legs. Most hardware or home improvement store have these and I'm sure you can find some that will not damage your wood floors.

Q3: Can I plant directly into the Cedar planters or must I use a pot placed in the planter

A: You can plant directly with soil in these planter boxes. We recommend that some rock or some type of product be put in the bottom first for aeration and then soil can be put on top of that. You might see some staining on the planter boxes due to the water, which is why a liner is recommended, but not necessary to prevent staining of the planter box. The planter boxes should be re-sealed annually, but not on the inside.

Q4: Is it safe to grow vegetables in these planters?

A: Our records indicate that vegetables can be safely grown in planters that are free of chemicals and that are untreated.
